History of Holy Family Parish

Feast Day: December 26

P

First Mass: December 9, 1894

Cornerstone of Current Church: September 15, 1957

Holy Family Parish in Lindsay, Nebraska, began in the early 1870s with Irish Catholic families who settled in the area from Ontario, Canada. With no Catholic church nearby, early Masses were held in private homes, and the first official parish Mass was celebrated on December 9, 1894. As the Catholic population grew, a church was quickly built in 1895, and a second, larger church followed just four years later. In 1899, the first Mass was held in the new frame building.

Holy Family School opened in 1900 with 51 students and three Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity. As enrollment grew, a new red-brick school building was completed in 1906, followed by continued expansion: the 9th grade was added in 1910, the 10th in 1911, and the 11th and 12th grades by 1917. The first high school graduating class was in 1919. By 1931, the school had 164 students and 10 Sisters serving in both the grade school and high school.

In 1957, the cornerstone was laid for a new church building, and on May 20, 1958, Archbishop Gerald T. Bergan dedicated the present church. It seats approximately 450 people and remains the center of parish life. A new gym was added in 1959, and by 1961, after the closing of nearby St. Bernard’s School, Holy Family remodeled to accommodate more students. A new grade school followed in 1965.

The parish continued to grow through the decades. A major school addition came in 1985, and four more rooms were added in 1994. That same year, after 94 years of service, the last of the Sisters departed. A new altar was installed in 1995, followed by church updates including new pews, sound systems, stained glass, and carpeting in the early 2000s. The rectory was remodeled in 2003.

In recent years, Holy Family has remained active and forward-looking. The gym was renovated in 2009, a new project center was built in 2011, and Holy Family Daycare opened in 2012. Additions like a greenhouse, distance learning technology, new lighting, and updated WiFi have kept the parish and school strong and relevant. Today, Holy Family Parish serves more than 300 families and continues its legacy of faith, education, and community service in rural Nebraska.
