Our History

St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Tarnov, Nebraska, established in 1880, is the state’s first Polish Catholic parish still in operation. The current Gothic Revival-style church, designed by Brother Leonard Dorschied, O.F.M., was constructed between 1900 and 1901 on land donated by Frank and Sophia Paprocki, immigrants from Tarnów, Poland. Parishioners contributed labor and materials, including repurposed brick and lumber from the 1898 Trans-Mississippi Exposition in Omaha, to complete the church at a cost of $17,000.

The church complex includes several significant structures:

  • Rectory, School-Convent, and Chicken House: Built between 1910 and 1911 to support the parish’s operations.

  • Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto: Constructed in 1926-1927 to honor World War I veterans from the Tarnov area, this grotto was inspired by the shrine in Lourdes, France.

In recognition of its historical and architectural significance, the St. Michael’s Church complex was added to the National Register of Historic Places on November 28, 1990.

Today, St. Michael’s offers Mass every Sunday at 10:30 a.m. The former school building now serves as a social hall and museum, while the old rectory, known as The Michael House, is available for event rentals and overnight stays.
